PROTESTS DISRUPT LESSONS AT KATOTO PRIMARY SCHOOL

Despite a late announcement by organizers of the anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations that they have temporarily suspended the Thursday and Friday demonstrations, some concerned Malawians still took to the street in Mzuzu on Thursday morning.

“Infact we did not receive official communication regarding the cancellation of Thursday and Friday demonstrations, and that we could not just take anything from the social media”, explained one of the protesters who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In a telephone interview, Patricia Luhanga, a teacher at Katoto primary School said lessons were normal at the School but news that Police have started throwing teargas at protesters who were at Katoto Secondary School ground forced them to immediately release the pupils.

“I think School authorities had no option but to send back the pupils for their safety as the situation got out of hand. We could hear a scaring noise from our campus, hence the decision to release the pupils”, she said.

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), who are organizers of the demonstrations on Wednesday 18th September, 2019, in the late evening said they will make a fresh announcement of the dates for demonstrations.
